Institutes
The flagship institute of The Hamner, CIIT focuses on research in the field of toxicology, which is concerned with the harmful effects of chemical, physical, and biological agents on living organisms, humans in particular. For over 30 years, CIIT has successfully carried out environmental risk assessment research, training hundreds of postdoctoral fellows and publishing thousands of articles in scientific publications.
The Center for Molecular Safety Science focuses on researching the cellular and molecular mechanisms of disease by applying new systems biology molecular methods, genomics and proteomics with tissue culture methods to build predictive tools of metabolic biomarkers.
The third Center at the Institutes provides for an innovative translational medicine accelerator, which is a "bench to bedside" approach for biotechnology and biopharmaceutical startup companies to translate scientific discoveries into new and safer medicines. The accelerator's new approach integrates safety and efficacy in early development studies, producing more information, faster, on specific therapeutic endpoints. This approach facilitates partnerships between startup companies and research hospitals that are conducting human clinical studies. It promotes technology development through informed guidance and efficiencies to comply with federal and state agency regulations. The translational medicine accelerator allows ways to avoid toxic events and lessen the cost of drug development, enabling the entire process to move forward with more certainty.
