Computing Resources
The Information Technology (IT) group at The Hamner provides extensive computing resources for the production and dissemination of scientific information.
Computer Systems
The Hamner has over 240 desktop and laboratory computers that communicate via an Ethernet network accommodating both wired and wireless connections. The IT group supports Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, and Linux operating systems.
A number of specialized research computer systems are on the network. A GeNet database server provides a Web browser interface to an Oracle database containing gene expression data. A ProvantisT toxicology data system collects in-life data and stores the information in an Oracle database. The 16-node Linux cluster for high-performance computing runs the Red Hat Linux version 7.3 operating system with OSCAR (Open Source Cluster Application Resources) cluster utilities.
Network and Network Servers
IT supports a high-speed, switched Ethernet network utilizing twisted-pair, fiber-optic, and wireless connections. A dedicated T1 circuit connects The Hamner to the Internet.
Various server computers support e-mail, The Hamner's internal and external Web sites, databases, and network backup. A network-attached storage (NAS) server provides high-volume shared file services.
Data Systems
IT provides system support for The Hamner's major computer applications. These applications include a building automation system that controls and logs environmental conditions in the facility, the Microsoft Solomon accounting system, and the ProvantisT software system for collecting toxicological data.
Help Desk
IT operates an e-mail-based help desk to automate tracking of computer problems and user help requests. IT also provides written instructions on its Intranet Web site regarding the use of computer equipment.
Consulting and Programming
IT staff provide consulting, planning, system design, and programming services to the scientific and administrative staff at The Hamner. These services involve a variety of applications, including database and Web-based systems.
