Research Support Units

  • Laboratory Annex

The Hamner opened its new laboratory annex in April 2004. The 28,000-square-foot, two-story annex accommodates larger laboratory groups and state-of-the-art instrumentation.

  • Animal Care Facilities

The Hamner has a 23,000-square-foot Animal Care Facility for the housing and experimental treatment of laboratory animals. The facility has been continuously accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) since 1981.

  • Genetically Engineered Mouse Facility

The Hamner completed renovations in 2002 to create a Genetically Engineered Mouse (GEM) Facility. The GEM Facility, which is located within the existing Animal Care Facility, makes it possible for animal care staff to provide specialized breeding services and management of mouse colonies for investigators.

  • Inhalation Exposure

The Inhalation Exposure Facility at The Hamner has the capability of handling a wide variety of animal inhalation studies ranging from brief, nose-only exposures to long-term, whole-body exposures.

  • DNA Micro-array

The DNA Microarray Facility at The Hamner was established in 2003 to support the Gene Expression Core. The Facility has an Affymetrix GeneChip® System and Applied Biosystem's real-time RT-PCR instrumentation.

  • Robotics Laboratory

The Robotics Laboratory at The Hamner was established in 2003 to support the Functional Genomics Research Program. Large-scale gain-of-function and loss-of-function screens are being used to dissect upstream and downstream cellular signaling networks and identify genes involved in determining susceptibility to environmental toxicants.

  • Analytical Chemistry Service

Analytical Chemistry Services at The Hamner provides instrumentation and technical support for Hamner scientists. Services include the analysis of tissues and compounds, development of chemical analysis methodology, and collaboration in study designs requiring the use of analytical chemistry.

  • Other Analytical Chemistry Service

Other analytical services available to scientists at The Hamner include electron microscopy, flow cytometry, and image analysis.

  • Necropsy and Histopathology

The Necropsy and Histopathology group at The Hamner provides a wide range of services in support of The Hamner's research programs. The group includes a veterinary pathologist under contract with The Hamner, a certified histotechnologist, two certified histotechnicians, and a certified medical technologist.

  • Golberg Library & eResource Center

The Golberg Library & eResource Center is a specialized library that supports the environmental and human health sciences research conducted at The Hamner. The library maintains subscriptions to over 1800 scientific journals and provides extensive electronic resources via the library intranet site.

  • Computing Resources

The Information Technology (IT) group at The Hamner provides extensive computing resources for the production and dissemination of scientific information. IT staff also provide consulting, planning, system design, and programming services.
