President's Message
Welcome to The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences, a unique, interdisciplinary research and training center on our 56 acre site in the heart of Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The Hamner (formerly CIIT Centers for Health Research) builds on 30 years of national and international distinction in public health and environmental sciences research and education. A recognized leader for providing a strong science platform to guide human health safety assessments and policy, CIIT will continue on the Hamner campus as the flagship center in toxicology and risk assessment.
Building on this foundation of translational science excellence, The Hamner is launching a life sciences research and business development campus that will be home to a new Institute for Translational Biomedical Sciences (ITBS), an Accelerator Facility for early stage life sciences technology companies, and academic and industry centers. The ITBS will be anchored by the Center for Molecular Safety Sciences, home to an academic and pharmaceutical industry consortium focused on the development of new and safer medicines. Rounding out the campus expansion will be an auditorium, meeting rooms, fitness center, cafeteria and library providing a gathering place for the thriving North Carolina biomedical research and technology community.
The Hamner is mobilizing collaborative partnerships among academic institutions, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, and government to broaden support of biomedical
and public health research and education. Through a seamless integration of basic and applied research, The Hamner completes a critical preclinical link in the translation of discoveries in the laboratory to foster the development of new and safe medicines and guide public health policy.
We have assembled an outstanding leadership and business development team. Dr. Charles Hamner, a recognized force in biotechnology and pharmaceutical business development in the state and nation, has generously given his time to chair our Board of Directors and honors this campus with his name. I join Dr. Hamner in seeking new levels of excellence in research and bridging the gap between scientific discovery and the development of new and safer medicines so that children and adults worldwide may lead healthier lives.
