About The Hamner

The Hamner

The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences is an independent, nonprofit coalition of universities, foundations, government agencies, and private sector businesses engaged in environmental risk assessment and biomedical sciences research and development. The goals of The Hamner are to facilitate development of new and safer medicines, guard public health and safety, and contribute to the economic growth of North Carolina and the nation.

There are three coordinated Centers within the Institutes:

  1. The flagship CIIT
  2. The Center for Molecular Safety Sciences
  3. The Accelerator Facility for Technology and Development

The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences has an annual operating budget of $21.5 million. Revenue is generated at $18 million from the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, with $3 million received from government grants and $500,000 from investment income. This revenue stream ensures the organization's continued progress and scientific advances in the areas of environmental risk assessment and translational research and development in the biomedical sciences.

As a health effects research institute, The Hamner is ideally located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, which is also the home of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and major facilities of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Three large research universities with toxicology programs are also located in the Research Triangle: Duke University, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Hamner scientists have enjoyed many highly productive collaborations with colleagues at all of these organizations over the years.
